Sam Kerr, the captain of the Matildas, is the most recent female football player to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
The ligament that joins the top of the shinbone (tibia) to the bottom of the thighbone (femur) can rupture in female athletes up to six times more frequently than in male athletes. The healing period is typically eight to twelve months.
The Washington Post revealed last summer that since 2021, at least 87 players from eight of the best women’s soccer leagues in the world—including English duo Beth Mead and Leah Williamson, Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter, and Dutch star Vivianne Miedema—have suffered ACL tears.
This is Kerr’s second ACL rupture in her career; the 30-year-old originally had the injury in 2011. If the damage is to the same knee, it is unknown.
ACL injuries are all too common, according to Professor Kieran Fallon, a sports medicine physician at The Australian National University and the team doctor for the Matildas for 13 years before the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000.
Fallon stated that the primary purpose of the ACL is to maintain stability in the knee joint, specifically in relation to rotating movements.
“Injuries to this ligament are common, especially in sports that require jumping or landing, as well as sports that require rotation.” Certainly, an orthopedic surgeon is required to repair the ligament in elite athletics, as many people aspire to return to that level of competition, even for recreational purposes.
According to Fallon, the most popular method of “fixing” an ACL is to replace the ligament entirely by taking a hamstring tendon from the rear of the knee.
In order to replicate the position and function of the ligament, he explained, “you basically make holes in the femur and the tibia and thread the hamstring tendon through those holes, across the knee joint.”
Athletes may be sidelined following surgery for up to a year while undergoing recovery.
It’s another blow for Kerr, who had to rehabilitate for months after missing some of the World Cup due to two calf problems. The captain of the Matildas doesn’t seem likely to be able to compete in the July 24–27 Olympics in Paris, 2024. To guarantee their place in the Olympics, the Matildas must defeat Uzbekistan the following month.
Tony Gustavsson, the coach of the Matildas, called Kerr’s injury “devastating.”
“This news is a devastating blow for everyone, considering how hard Sam has worked over the past six months to return to play,” Gustavsson added.
“At this point, we want to make sure she has all the help she needs and wants to get through rehab and recovery.”
Fallon stated that female athletes are more likely to sustain an ACL injury, however the exact cause is still mostly a mystery. Nike released a football boot especially for women last year in an attempt to try and lower the amount of ACL injuries, which were causing such a stir in the sport.
Fallon stated that there are certain anatomical variables that may increase a woman’s risk of harm, but further research is needed to determine exactly what those risks might be.
Fallon and other researchers are currently investigating potential social and environmental factors that may impact the risk of injury, such as the facilities accessible to female athletes, the amount of strength and conditioning coaches on female sports teams relative to men’s teams, and the education options available to female players.
